Going to WTOD, the first time I met Billy Webb he was doing a remote in the WTOD traveling Gold Mine at Parkway Plaza in South Toledo. I would end up buying the Traveling Gold mine from WTOD later on. Ted Miofski (Chief engineer) and I would drive around Toledo in the traveling Gold Mine setting up remotes for the station.
When WTOD went country Billy Webb, Lee Fowler and Bill Manders went to WTTO where BIG JIM EDWARDS aka my good friend Jim Davis had worked before going to CKLW. Two weeks later Bill Manders came back to WTOD. Bob Kelley went to WDHO TV 24 and did SKIPPY THE SCARE CROW. TV 24 studios was across the hall from WTTO and I would go up to WTTO and chat with Lee Fowler and Bill Webb and then go across the hall to TV 24 where Kelly was doing his SKippy kiddee show. Bob Malik who done Bowling For Dollars done the crow hand puppet for Kelly. When Kelly did the Christmas special Skippy show he had me go behind the wall with Malik and help Bob put the ears and other accouterments on the crow as Kelly read "The Night Before Christmas" I was amazed that one of the engineers for the show was a wrestler on Big Time Wrestling on TV 24's local wrestling show....LOL Kelly and Malik did some production for my show on WAWR. Kelly would leave TV 24 and go to WWJ Detroit before coming back to good ole Toledo.
I was one of the first Jones Boys on WGLN for Mike Shaw when WGLN went on the air. I bought the first jingle we used on the air when Bob Ladd (WAWR) and I bought a jingle package from Bruce Buchanan in Dallas. He made jingle for WAWR and WGLN when I went to work up there. When I left WGLN and went to work for WTOD I took my jingle with me....LOL which made Shaw mad and he wouldn't talk to me after that...LOL
I loved Bob Martz and to me he was one of the funniest guys in radio. He patterned himself after Steve Allen and he would cough and I would laugh my butt off. Bob used to walk into the studio while I was doing my show and ask if he could sit in and I would say sure....I mean he is the boss so what am I going to do tell him no????? LOL We would do the Martz and Allen show for a little while and he would leave...
Later on when Martz went to WCWA he wanted me to come to work over there and had me go back and sit in the studio with Terry Shaw to look over the operation. But I stayed at WTOD as I would have had to drive uptown to get to the studio and I was not keen on driving uptown everyday to get to WCWA.
You and Lou are doing a great job job!
